The recent release of Chat GPT and other AI tools have prompted instructors to understand their capabilities and limitations. Past experiences with innovative technologies like calculators and smartphones have shown us that initial worries about how the technologies will help students cheat or detract from learning can give way to innovative approaches for higher education! What if we can use this moment as an opportunity to refocus our attention on different activities and assessments will have the most value to our students?
There are many ways to promote and assess student learning that are not easily replicated by AI, and some that utilize its capabilities. Students will be entering careers where they will have to navigate and critically evaluate evolving sources of information and novel technologies to solve complex problems. Authentic assessments do just this – learning in real-world contexts.
This lunch and learn session will focus on approached to authentic assessments, including how AI tools can aid in developing such learning activities.
